There are public offers and there are targeted personal offers. There is nothing better in the Points and Miles world than a targeted offer. Many readers have asked about the best cards to sign up for and in general, any big targeted offer is hard to beat. Who wouldn’t want double the sign up points for half the spending? Don’t throw points away by applying without shopping around! Here’s how…

Never apply for an American Express card without first checking the CreditCards.com Card Match Tool. The tool matches your credit profile to any targeted offers available, which can mean major miles and fractional spending. The American Express Premier Rewards Gold Card for example, generally comes with 25,000 Membership Rewards points after $2,000 in spending within the first three months. By checking the card match tool, Laura was matched to a private targeted offer from Amex giving her 50,000 Membership Rewards points for only $1,000 spend in the first three months. I have heard rumors of there being other outstanding offers out there for my personal favorite, the Platinum Card, as well as select Delta cards. The Gold card just introduced a new benefit of a $100 airline credit annually starting in June, which can be used for checked bags, seat upgrades and more. The card’s annual fee is waived for the first year and then $175 for the second. With the $100 airline fee credit each year, you come out $25 ahead (2x$100 fee credit – annual fee second year), not to mention the 25-50,000 bonus points. These points can be worth thousands if transferred to an airline towards an optimal flight award.

As annoying as marketing emails and snail mail marketing can be, it’s more annoying to miss out on major miles. When possible, opt in for marketing communications and offers from airlines, card issuers and travel products you care about. You never know what you might find. Aside from credit card offers, occasionally elite status airline offers come about and these days perks are more important than ever. If you hate marketing emails as much as I do, you can always make an email account just for them….
