Six years ago tomorrow, I had a rare flight cancellation. Despite constant flying, I’ve really only had a few fully cancelled flights. I can’t tell you why luck has been so kind to me, but it has. But not in November of 2011. I had just began a whirlwind, international romance when I got the in app notification.

The whirlwind romance we’re talking about, is now my wife of three years, and co founder of the site, Laura. We began dating after she had confirmed moving back from New York to the UK, and therefore if I wanted to have a shot at things, I needed to fly to the UK. I promised I would, and on the first attempt, my flight was cancelled. Would she even believe me?

I just couldn’t believe the luck. I had just decided to dive in head first, and I turn to my phone to see that the flight is cancelled. I could only imagine her reaction, thinking I must be completely full of it, and perhaps I was never coming at all. But there’s a reason airlines have apps, and a reason which you should have them. After a single tap, I was confirmed on the next flight out to London.

I had planned to cut Thanksgiving short with my family, missing out on many of our traditions, but thanks to this unintended consequence, I was able to enjoy an entire day of Thanksgiving with my immediate family, and still able to make it to London, with only a few hours delay. The takeaway here is that everyone gets stressed over peak travel times, everyone has got somewhere to be, but sometimes, for whatever reason – you’ve just gotta go with the flow. Unforeseen, unintended consequences can be magic, and hey, that flight cancellation still worked out pretty well for me.
