UPDATE: This promotion ends today at 11:59pm ET. If you want to buy Hilton points at the promo rate, you’ll need to complete your purchase by this time.
Look, I know buying points can be quite a contentious topic in some circles but for many, it’s an easy way to save thousands on hotel stays and premium cabin flights, almost instantly. Instant is fun. That doesn’t mean we should all just throw caution to the wind and buy points all the time but, if you’re strategic, you can do some amazing things.
With that it in mind, here’s how you can really get max value out of the current Hilton points sale. Let’s dive right into it!
Buy Hilton Points With Up To A 100% Bonus
This morning, I had an email from Hilton reminding me that I could buy Hilton points with a 100% bonus. Your bonus offer might be different but this should get you thinking. What can you really do with a bonus offer when buying Hilton points?
Well, let’s start with the basics:
- You may buy up to 80,000 Hilton points within a calendar year
- You must buy at least 10,000 Hilton points to receive the bonus
- The promo period ends February 26, 2019 at 11:50pm ET
- Log in to your account to see your promotional offer
If you have the 100% bonus offer, you’ll be able to buy up to 160,000 Hilton points for $800 which means you’re buying them at a rate of 0.5 cents each. Yep, you can exceed the “cap” on points in these bonus offers. Many people value Hilton points at right around 0.5 cents but there are some clever ways to extract even more value from them.
Since Hilton partners with Points.com to sell points, you sadly won’t be able to take advantage of any credit card bonus categories when you purchase. If you want to make the most of it, you can earn 2X Membership Rewards points with the Blue Business Plus Card From American Express (Learn More). Alternatively, you can earn 1.5X Ultimate Rewards points with either the Ink Business Unlimited credit card (Learn More) or the Chase Freedom Unlimited credit card. Every point helps, right?
Pro-Tip: Team Up To Buy Even More Points
You know what’s better than 160,000 Hilton points? That’s right, 320,000 Hilton points. What’s better than that? 520,000 Hilton points. You get the picture.
Since Hilton lets you pool points from multiple accounts — you can send or receive from up to 10 accounts, you can work with a significant other, family or friends to get the points you need for a stay at an amazing Hilton property.
To send or receive points, you’ll need 1,000 points in your account — simple enough with this deal — and you can transfer up to 500,000 Hilton points into a pool within a calendar year.
That means a couple could easily grab up to 320,000 Hilton points during this promo. With just another 60,000 Hilton points, you’d be able to book some amazing stays at top-tier Hilton properties at brands such as Conrad and Waldorf Astoria.
Remember, you can partner with up to 10 people so it shouldn’t be too hard to find someone to help you out with the remaining points.
5th Night Free Means Crazy Value
When buying points, the best way to save tons of cash on your stays is to take advantage of Hilton’s 5th night free policy for award stays. It’s as simple as it sounds, book an award stay of 5 nights for the price of 4. Sign me up!
That means a stay at a top tier property that often costs 95,000 points per night will cost 380,000 points for 4 nights or 5 nights, so why not stay the extra night?!
Conrad Bora Bora Nui
If you’re going to make the trip all the way to Bora Bora, you might as well enjoy total luxury once you’re there and the Conrad Bora Bora Nui might just be the best points deal out there.
With rates that exceed $800 when you include taxes and the service charge, using 320,000 points for five nights is an insane deal that gets you 1.3 cents per point in value. That’s over two and a half times the standard value of a Hilton point!
More plainly, by pooling points with one other person and taking advantage of the 100% bonus, you’d end up paying $320 per night, roughly $480 less than the cash rate.
Conrad Koh Samui
Not quite as difficult to reach, the island of Koh Samui in Thailand also has a highly regarded Conrad property. Of course, if you’re planning on booking a cash rate, you’d better be ready to drop quite a bit of it. It’s no wonder a room at a property like this can fetch over $650 per night.
However, with 100% Hilton points bonus and pooling points with a couple others, you can buy the necessary 380,000 Hilton points for $1,900. That comes out to a nightly rate of $380 which is $270 less than the cash rate.
Conrad Maldives Rangali Island
Oh, the Maldives. Is there a beautiful beach destination that gets more chatter among travel enthusiasts? We’re not sure there is and for good reason. If you’re looking for a romantic beach retreat, the Maldives has everything you could ever want.
Unsurprisingly, a stay at the Conrad Maldives Rangali Island could cost you over $880 per night but with a 5th-night free award booking, you could book for 380,000 Hilton points. By taking advantage of the 100% promo and pooling points, this stay would cost $380 per night. That’s an insane $500 off the cost of the nightly cash rate!
The London NYC
Changing things up a bit, we head to The London NYC in the Big Apple. With views of Central Park, you won’t be disappointed with a stay here. Of course, the fact that you can book 5 nights for 380,000 Hilton points rather than over $2,700 doesn’t hurt either!
If you’re looking for some great ideas for how to spend your time, let us help you get started with a simple plan for 48 amazing hours in New York City.
Waldorf Astoria Jerusalem
If you’re a history buff, it’s hard to go wrong with a trip to Jerusalem as there’s more than enough for you to explore in this amazing city. Staying at the Waldorf Astoria will only make the trip even better.
While Conrad properties have a modern take on luxury, you’ll get a traditional luxury experience with this Waldorf Astoria property. After a long day exploring the city, don’t you want to come back to a place where you can just relax?
With cash rates often pushing past $500 or even $600 per night, buying Hilton points with a 100% bonus doesn’t sound like a bad idea! On a five night stay, you can save up to $200+ per night when you and two others buy 380,000 points.
Amex Hilton Credit Cards Can Help
The Hilton Amex cards are another way to get your hands on a bunch of Hilton points. Just remember that Chase won’t approve anyone with more than 5 new cards opened in a 24 month window, so if you have other cards to get, prioritize. You can still get The Hilton Honors American Express Business Card (Learn More) and not mess with your Chase 5/24 status though either way.
There are three different personal card options. If you spend a lot at U.S. supermarkets or U.S. gas stations, the 6X bonus categories that come with the Hilton Honors American Express Ascend Card (Learn More) is a great option. The Hilton Honors Card (Learn More) is the no annual fee version and it earns 5X in the same categories instead of 6X.
Alternatively, if you want automatic Diamond status and a guaranteed free weekend night certificate every year you renew, the Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card (Learn More) is the way to go.
Clearly, there are some amazing ways to really get the most out of your points purchase from Hilton during this promo. We’ve only just scratched the surface with these five Hilton properties but there are many more. In fact, it’s not just luxury hotels where you can benefit. You might even find an expensive mid-tier hotel or two where you can get great value.
If you’re putting together a trip in the next year, see what Hilton options you have and see if buying points during this promo make sense for you. If it means saving a few hundred bucks per night, it just might.
