Dear transfer bonuses, we love you…

Yesterday American Express announced a limited time transfer bonus, when you turn your US American Express Membership Rewards Points into Air France + KLM Flying Blue miles. It’s always exciting turning a point into more than one points, but it’s even more exciting when you know exactly what to do with those points. Business class to Europe for just 50,000 Amex points and $20 bucks anyone? Yeah, that’s pretty great.

50,000 Points For Delta, KLM or Air France Business Class

You can book flights from the US to Europe or vice versa on Air France, Delta or KLM. If you book Delta, you’ll pay just roughly $20 in fees. If you book KLM or Air France, you’ll pay more like $150, but you’ll enjoy a slightly more refined experience. However you slice it, these tickets generally require 62,500 points, but since there’s a 1.25x transfer bonus – you can do it for just 50,000.

US Amex Points Only – But Works Both Ways

If you have an Amex card outside of the US, it’s sadly not eligible for this transfer bonus. But do note – 62,500 points for a one way business class flight is still great value, and less than Delta charges for its own flights. This is superb value and is a great way to combine a nice cheap one way flight with a reasonable stack of points for a cool trip to virtually any destination in Europe or the US. Thanks to Delta’s network in the US and KLM/Air France’s network in Europe, even harder to reach destinations are easy. The bonus will automatically appear when you try to use points while logged into your US Amex Membership Rewards account.

Search First, Transfer Later

Flying Blue is one of the lovely programs which allows you to hold tickets you’ve found before booking them. Simply create a FlyingBlue account, if you haven’t already and click here to login and search for flights. If you press “around these dates” you’ll see a nice, easy flexible calendar showing you when 62,500 point flights are available. When you find flights that work, simply call FlyingBlue and ask to hold the tickets. You can then transfer your 50,000 Amex Points, which thanks to the bonus will become 62,500 FlyingBlue points, the exact amount you need. The transfer bonus is valid until June 15th, 2018.

Comparing Opportunities

This is by far one of the “cheapest” and most economical ways to use points to escape economy to Europe. Virgin Atlantic offers a similar deal for Delta flights to Europe using Amex Points, but not the UK. For just 50,000 points, there’s a whole lot to love here – wit the choice of three great airlines. And if you’re really smart, you’ll consider taking one of the amazing business class or premium economy deals from Europe that keep popping up, so you can return at a later date on the cheap.
