Raise your hand if you want to travel during the summer. Ok, now Raise your hand if you’re prepared to undertake the bank robbery necessary to pay for international economy flights. That should clear the room out. Forget economy, let’s go in business class, without robbing banks, just for redeeming a reasonable amount of miles. Flights to and from Europe to the US are wide open using miles from both American Airlines and British Airways, with availability for the whole gang. If you use American miles you’ll even avoid surcharges…

The Routes + Availability

New York to London (v/v)

Sporadic availability in the summer with great availability in the fall. Look for Monday-Wednesday departures. Wide open in October/November/December.

Los Angeles To London (v/v)

You can pick virtually any date in June, July or August with space for up to four. There is upgrade space available as well for those that want to spare miles…

Miami To London (v/v)

Great availability both ways in the summer months, with particularly great space in July and August. You’ll want to avoid the old 777’s and grab a 77W, American’s best business seat.

Expert Tips

All the flights mentioned are operated by American Airlines. They can be booked with both British Airways Avios and American Airlines miles. Booking with American miles will save you over $400 per ticket in taxes and fees, not to mention a minimum of 10,000 miles each way. If you’re used to British Airways prices, it’s a great seat on a long flight for your miles and no worse of a deal than you ever get. If you’ve been stacking American AAdvantage miles, this is a wonderful opportunity to cash in on premium travel while the going is good. When searching space, be sure to click “flight details”. Ideally you want to see 77W as the aircraft used. It will feature one of the most comfortable business class seats in the sky.
