Cattle class, bus service, there are quite a few ways to make flying economy sound degrading. It’s not. It’s often the most logical and cost efficient way to see the world, however large or small your bank balance. It’s how most people fly, and as business and first class cabins become larger and more luxurious, the space seems to be made up with inches from economy. Will you notice as your inches disappear? Qatar Airways CEO thinks you’re too dumb to count to ten. And no, he doesn’t think you will.

Qatar Airways CEO, Akbar Al Baker, has a knack for saying things that make other airline CEO’s, journalists and or passengers want to punch him. Sometimes he’s just keeping it real, when talking about US carriers not wanting to work hard and innovate, and other times he’s downright offensive. At a press event yesterday, Al Baker, who loves to say that Qatar Economy is like other airlines Premium Economy, said that people who aren’t aviation journalists won’t be able to tell the difference when the airline downsizes the seats. I beg to ^^^^ disagree…

“A general passenger who is “not a journalist in aviation” would not notice the difference in width and comfort, but ultimately the airline was “in the business of making money” by adding as many passengers as feasible.”

Taking a nine across cabin and turning it into 10 is less spacious. How dare a well heeled CEO, whose livelihood depends on full economy cabins, insult you, me, and everyone on earth that flies economy by saying we can’t and won’t notice the difference. Not only does it make my opinion as a travel writer irrelevant, it implies that you are too thick to count to ten.
