With the phrase "you've got to know when to hold em', know when to fold em'" I'd think Kenny Rogers knows a thing or two about gambling. I wonder what he thinks about Delta? Whatever the answer, we should count our blessings because Delta have offered a royal flush opportunity for anyone holding Skymiles to fold em' before they run out of value next year.
For the first time I can recall, Delta is discounting award tickets you'd actually like to book. You can snag business class round trips from the US to Europe for as low as 87,000 miles round trip and similar economy tickets for as low as 42,000 miles round trip. This is a fantastic offer, because Delta does not add heavy surcharges to award tickets originating in the states and minus a few bucks here and there, what you see is what you get as far as price. It appears that the sales are targeted to dates from October to February of next year and feature cities including London and Amsterdam for travel originating in the United States from many cities, though you'll have the easiest time searching from New York or Atlanta. My sister recently signed up for the Delta American Express card when it offered a 60,000 mile sign up bonus. After a long haul, some dining out and taking advantage of mileage promotions, she's hovering right around 87,000 miles and this offers her more value for her miles than I ever expected her to see again. Considering standard economy awards to Europe require 62,500 miles round trip and business requires a whopping 125,000 round trip, 87,000 and 42,000 is a discount worth praising.
Not to be dramatic, but this really could be a great last hurrah for your Delta miles. I always do my best to be direct with anyone willing to read this blog and I personally have already cashed in my miles in search of greener pastures. I just don't like the direction Delta's loyalty department is headed in. If you have miles left on the table this is a unique opportunity to redeem them at rates lower than you could've found anytime in the last eight years. Could I be wrong? Of course. Could it be an excellent opportunity which I wish I still had miles to take advantage of? Yes. Just my two cents....
